With the ever increasing cost of electricity, I have a friend who was wondering whether installing ceiling fans were worthwhile – i.e. would they save money on air conditioning if they installed ceiling fans? She is also a bit of a greenie and wanted to do something about her carbon foot print. On the other hand she hates sweating through the muggy summer nights.
As I started researching for her (she thinks Facebook IS the Internet, and the local building supply store was less than helpful) I came across the Hunter 20803 Low Profile III – it looked like a pretty good fan – particularly if you need a fan for a lower ceiling room.
Hunter’s byline is that they “combine 19th century craftsmanship with 21st century design and technology”. The 20803 model is one of the many low profile fans that Hunter offer in a variety of blade numbers (four or five), blade lengths (42″ or 52″) and a variety of blade styles and colors. The 20803 is a the white, 52″, 5 blade version of this family of popular ceiling fans.
Benefits Of the Hunter 20803
This is a simple, white fan with clean lines. If you are looking for a fan which makes a statement and shouts ”look at me” – the this fan won’t be on your shopping list. If however you are looking for a unobtrusive fan which will fade into your room’s decor, the Hunter 20830 white finished unit with white blades could be the answer.
The Hunter 20803 uses the “Whisper Wind®” motor which is probably one of the biggest benefit of paying a little more for a ceiling fan to get a superior product. Anyone who has spent a sleepless night under a noisy fan – knows that its well worth spending a few more dollars so that you don’t notice that the appliance is running!
There is a 3-speed pull chain included in this unit – which means that you don’t need to install a separate control switch on the wall, unless you want to.
This is a good sized fan – with a claimed airflow of 5000 CFM on high speed. The more airflow the better in terms of keeping cool. A combination of a powerful 170RPM motor and a engineering of 76 CF/minute/Watt – means that you have the maximum airflow with the minimum of electricity costs (66W is the usage claimed).
Hunter backs their products with over a 100 years of company history and a limited lifetime warranty – which means that if something does go wrong you are covered. Product Audience The Hunter 20803 is designed to appeal to the many of use who want a quality product but can’t afford an outrageous price. This ceiling fan isn’t a design statement or a the cheapest ceiling fan available. However if you want a reliable unit that will get the job done this fan is well worth a second look.
If you are not a confident DIYer who has done some electrical work previously you will probably want a contractor to install the Hunter low profile fan for you.

- The Hunter 20803 is a low profile fan. This means that its designed for lower ceiling rooms of up to 8′ high.

- The fan is bracket mounted that means that it is fitted directly to the ceiling without the use of a down rod.
- The ceiling direct mounting means that as the fan fits close to the ceiling without the need of a down rod this fan will not suit a sloped or chapel style ceiling.
- It also won’t be effective for a very high ceiling area – you need to be within reach of the airflow for it to have the effect of cooling you!

Hunter are one of the oldest fan manufacturers in the US. They are not in the market of cheap ceiling fans – instead they justify the price point on value for money and quality. It appears that they succeed, if you read their many happy customer’s reviews of this particular fan.

This particular model doesn’t come with either a light or heating options. However you have the options of either buying a *Hunter 27218 Energy Efficient Low Profile Light Kit*.
However check the price of the *Hunter 20810 Low Profile III Plus* as this product is identical to the 20803 except it includes the light.
Product Downsides
This product is only rated for indoor use. You will need search for a different model if you want an outdoor ceiling fan.
